College and University Professors
College professors teach at colleges and universities. They have received a Ph. D in a certain area of study. With this degree, they are able to instruct college students on a higher level of learning. Some professors start out in their respective field as a worker or teacher and then choose to go back to school and turn to academia. These professors can offer their students real world experiences that may make the class more valuable. The subjects that are taught at colleges are very broad, therefore a professor could teach anything from Calculus to Ceramics. College professors are the highest paid in the teaching occupation. However, when starting out you must work your way up from a lecturer, instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and finally to a tenured professor. Pay raises will come with each position. They typically start out around an average of $40,000 per year and can eventually make up to $90,000 or more per year.

Administrators, Principals, and Assistants
Principals are usually mature individuals that have been teaching for a number of years. Principals oversee the running and management of a school. They are responsible for making sure students are safe, and that the rules are followed. They also set school's schedules and budget, among other duties. Principals are usually hired by the school board members. There are also assistant principals, that are directly under the head principal in the chain of command. The assistant principal deals with smaller problems that the head principal may not have time for.
At colleges and universities there are deans and provosts who are responsible for overseeing the certain academic divisions in a university. They don't work as closely with the professors and students as a principal would, but the professions parallel each other. |
