Postal Service Workers

People working for the postal service sort, organize and deliver mail to people across the country. They are employed at post offices. The positions at a post office are post office clerks, mail sorters, and postal carriers. Unfortunately, there probably won't be a lot of job openings in the postal field over the next ten years. This is due to new technologies that have advanced the way the mail is sorted and handled before it is delivered. In addition to the United States Postal Service (USPS), there are other delivery services such as UPS, Fed Ex, and DHL. These companies also employ drivers and deliverers for packages and other types of mail.

Mail people work across the country in every zip code. Every town with one has a post office, now matter how big or small the town may be. The postal workers are important for communications on a daily basis, but many jobs are being replaced by computers and robots. However, the average postal worker makes well above minimum wage at around $44,000 per year.

Post Office Clerks and Mail Sorters / Men

If you work at a local post office, you will typically work a 40 hour week. The post offices are also closed on major holidays, and usually Sundays. A postal clerk is the postal worker that greets you at the desk. You can buy stamps and envelopes here. The postal clerk will also help you send a package. The mail sorters place the letters and packages in certain areas of the post office to be distributed to the postal carriers, or mail men. The mail men are responsible for delivering the mail to homes and businesses in a certain smaller area, perhaps a zip code. Smaller towns employ one or two mail men, while large cites could have a few hundred. Mail men can walk or drive their route, depending on how large it is.

Delivery Drivers for Fed Ex and UPS

Mail men or delivery people can also work for some other large postal companies such as FedEx or UPS. These people can be employed as mail sorters in the distribution center, but the majority of employees are drivers. The delivery drivers drive large trucks full of mail and packages across large and even small areas. Because the mail must arrive at its destination on time, the drivers sometimes work shifts. They also can be under pressure to meet a deadline, such as an overnight delivery. Companies like Fed Ex even employ pilots to fly the large cargo planes that carry letters and packages.
