Physicians and Medical Doctors

A physician is a medical doctor who has undergone specific schooling and years of training. They are licensed to treat and care for people and medical issues. The typical time in school is about eight years, with an additional one to two years of a residency training program at a teaching hospital. After graduation from medical school, the physician can practice general medicine, or specialize into a more specific area of care such as cardiology, neurology, oncology, or immunology. These specialties take further schooling and practice to become certified, which usually goes hand in hand with making a higher salary. If a physician wishes to specialize, he or she studies about the certain area of the body and masters the issues that affect it. They are able to practice general medicine, as well as their specialty field. It is usually very difficult to become a physician. First of all, you must have a strong interest in the human body and want to help people. Secondly, you must complete an undergraduate degree with courses in the natural sciences. It is very important for the hopeful physician to get good grades in these courses. This is in preparation for the M-CAT exam that you must take before applying to medical schools. The application process to medical schools is very long and highly competitive. Only the students that would potentially make a good doctor are chosen based on a number of factors. Doctors are highly respected and often feel rewarded for helping people everyday.

Physicians and specialty doctors work in hospitals, clinics, and private practices across the country. They can sometimes work long hours, and many days in a row. This is typical in a hospital setting. Sometimes, doctors can be on-call. This happens in an Emergency Room. A doctor doesn't have to stand around and wait for patients to come to the ER, but he is called when one arrives. Physicians working in private practices have the flexibility to create their own hours and days worked. The lowest paid physicians are the general practitioners, on average. They make an average pay of $137,000 per year. From here, the specialty physicians make more money. The highest paid doctor is usually an anesthesiologist, making around $320,000 per year with experience.
