Mehcanics and Technicians

Mechanics, or technicians, are one type of manual laborer. There are different types of mechanics, depending on what they work with. Automobile mechanics, diesel mechanics, or small engine mechanics that work on motorcycles are a few of the different kinds. The mechanics are employed at car dealerships, car service stations, and gas stations across the country.

Auto Mechanics and Technicians

Auto technicians work mainly with cars, trucks, and vans. They can perform the basic services a car needs to run properly such as oil changes. Auto mechanics also are trained to find out what problem a car is having, and then fix it. Today, mechanics usually undergo some type of training before starting to work. There are some programs offered at different schools. On average, an auto tech makes about $16 dollars an hour.

Diesel Mechanics and Technicians

Diesel mechanics are specially trained to work on diesel engines. These engines are found in tractor trailers and large trucks. The maintenance of diesel engines on tractor trailers is important for the transport of goods. A diesel mechanic earns about $17 dollars an hour, making slightly more on average than an auto mechanic.

Small Engine Mechanics

There is another area of specialization in the mechanical trade. Small engine mechanics work on engines found in motorcycles, lawn mowers, boats, and other engine-powered tools. Some of these mechanics choose to work on only one type of engine, yet others work on a few different kinds. Small engine mechanics may be able to open a private business because they have a certain specialty, for example a lawn mower repair shop. Many small engine mechanics learn their trade by working on small engines in their free time. Unfortunately, these small engine technicians make the least in this field at about $14 dollars an hour.
