There are many types of jobs available in the law enforcement category. People that do this type of work are police officers, sheriffs, detectives, security guards, and game wardens, among others. The responsibility of these professionals is to protect people’s property and lives, and enforce the law. Law enforcement workers are employed at the city, state, or government level and can work in a variety of environments. The work environment can be very stressful, and even dangerous at times.

People working in law enforcement have a great deal of responsibility and are respected in their communities. Every town in the country has a police officer of some sort to keep the area safe. Of course, there are bigger police departments in larger cities where there are more people. Different types of law enforcement officers work together to solve crimes, such as the detective and police officers. Detectives also work with the judicial system during court trails. Lawyers need detectives to do research so that they can get evidence to support their cases. Therefore, it is important to have good communication skills if you are working in law enforcement.

Today, there are programs at colleges and trade schools to train to be a police officer or other law enforcement professional. These programs can be two to four years in length, and provide the person with a better chance of getting a job in this highly competitive occupation. There is also the option to advance within the law enforcement occupation. You can start out as an untrained security guard, to possibly work your way up onto the police force of the city. With each advancement, pay raises are common. As an entry level employee, it is important to be physically fit and have good eyesight.
