The millions of people that go on vacations or travel each year rely on people in this industry to make their trip an enjoyable one. People in the various divisions of travel and tourism work with travel agents and hotels to plan events and outings for people that are traveling. This is particularly popular in tropical and foreign places. 
There are opportunities for advancement in the hospitality industry. Often hotel clerks can earn an assistant manager, or floor manager position. Also, in the restaurant service, kitchen staff members can work up to being a sous chef. Because of these opportunities, many young people are choosing a career in the hospitality industry, and plan to advance throughout their lives. Wages are based on the specific position, so they vary greatly. Average salaries will also vary based on the facility you are employed at, and the geographic area. A member of a hotel housekeeping staff in a small town hotel will not make as much as a maid working in a big city for example. Another perk in working in the hospitality industry is the chance to possibly travel. Cruise ships, and air lines are popular employers of people in this industry.
